The Astonishing 1970 Cornfield Bomber Incident: How an F-106 Landed Itself After the Pilot Ejected
Welcome to The Northern Historian! In this video, we delve into one of the most incredible aviation incidents in history - the 1970 Cornfield Bomber incident. Discover how a US Air Force F-106 Delta Dart miraculously landed itself in a farmer's field after the pilot ejected. This remarkable event remains a topic of fascination among military history enthusiasts and aviation experts alike.
The Cornfield Bomber Incident
On February 2, 1970, 1st Lt Gary Foust found himself in a life-threatening situation. During a training mission over Montana, his F-106 Delta Dart entered an uncontrollable flat spin. With no other options, Foust was forced to eject from the aircraft, assuming it would crash. However, what happened next was nothing short of miraculous. The jet, now unmanned, miraculously recovered from the spin, levelled out, and made a perfect belly landing in a snow-covered cornfield near Big Sandy, Montana. This extraordinary event earned the aircraft the nickname "Cornfield Bomber."
How Did the F-106 Land Itself?
This video explores the sequence of events leading up to this unbelievable landing. We examine the technical aspects of the F-106 Delta Dart, a supersonic interceptor aircraft, and how its design contributed to this rare occurrence. Learn about the emergency ejection procedure and how the sudden change in aerodynamics after the pilot's ejection allowed the aircraft to stabilize.

Some 35 years ago, as a young first officer on L1011 Tristars, I flew with Captain John Tank. I remember him as a very pleasant man to fly with. I remember him telling me the story of this incident. One amusing part was that when he landed he gathered up his parachute in his arms and walked along a country lane to a bus stop where he politely joined the queue. Those in the queue paid little or no attention to a man with a parachute. Quite normal.

This is a lot of huffing and puffing for little blow. The real story about the tall boy comes in their use on German U-boat pens. The British waited until the U-boats pens were finished thinking their tall boy bombs could be used to destroy them after so much work had gone into their construction. Too bad they were completely wrong yet AGAIN! The roofs of the U-boat pens were 20 ft thick reinforced concrete. The much ballyhooed bombs barely scratched the surface. Same for the flak towers in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna. Those massive concrete structures are still there to this day completely undamaged and indestructible.

I joined up in 83 so very much my era aircraft. Many people tell of being there at that time. 'Apparently' the controller had to ask the pilot his missile status on return to the airfield several times because there was a number missing. Also the ground crew looked at the aircraft and missing missile. I think a fortunate miss of the pilot but a heck of a lot learned, not obly for aircrew, but also ground crew. In 87 I was posted to Guttersloh on 18 SQN Chinooks.

How on earth would these be expected to deliver nuclear ordinance into Soviet territory when they couldn't drop conventional ordinance to the Falklands? Refueling was their main obstacle not radars or aaa or enemy fighters. Just flying straight south until tanks need topping off? I can see this old gal delivering free fall atom bombs in the 50s or maybe with 60s technology but nothing past that.

A system using thrust vectoring to push the tail up therefore nose down using bleed air from the engines could be used to recover from a deep stall on T tail planes, but i suppose it would be quite complex and not make economical sense. Just a bit of outside the box thinking.
